Summary of Componential Characteristics and Sources Identification of PM2.5 in Beijing

This research was made by Jing Xu, Guo’an Ding, Peng Yan, Shufeng Wang, Zhaoyang Meng, Yangmei Zhang, Yuche Liu, Xiaoling Zhang and Xiangde Xu in China Meteorological Administration, Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry.

This research was about sources of PM2.5 in Beijing from 2003 to 2004. In this research, the team use an advanced method called PMF (positive matrix factorization) instead of the common method, CMB, to analyze data from their observations. Here are some results. Daily average mass concentration of PM2.5 in different seasons are different. The average mass concentration in summer is the lowest among 4 seasons. Because of different wind direction, the mass concentration of PM2.5 could also change obviously. There is a steelworks in the southwest of Beijing. The most important source concerned about our team’s project is the composition of PM2.5 in Beijing. From the report, we can see that soil dust, vehicle exhaust, waste incineration, coal combustion and steel making are main sources that made contribution to PM2.5

The research showed the componential characteristics and sources identification of PM2.5 in Beijing directly. It is convenient for government have a clear target to make laws and rules for controlling the mass concentration. This report also tells people that PM2.5 not only from industrial production, but also from people’s daily life.
