I never expected that I would be so busy. Why can’t there be 25 hours in a day? complained Liu Ran in Hong Kong as mid-term exams were going on.

The 18-year-old was Shandong Province’s top scorer in this year’s college entrance examination. After graduating from Tai’an No.1 High School, she chose the Chinese University of Hong Kong(香港中文大学), although both Peking University and Tsinghua University promised her a place.

Essays, book reports and presentations also take plenty of time to prepare. And , of course, there are various parties to attend.

It was Mother’s Day morning last year and I was doing my shopping at our local supermarket with my five-year-old son, Tenyson. As we were leaving, we found that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and had hit her head on the concrete. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what had happened to the couple. He said to me, Mum, it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.

At the front of the supermarket a charity(慈善) group had set up a stand selling cooked sausages and flowers to raise funds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. It will make her feel better, he said. I was amazed that he’d come up with such a sweet idea. So we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer her up. Just take it, she replied. I can’t take your money for such a wonderful gesture.

By now paramedics(救援人员)had arrived, and were attending the injured woman. As we walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment. He said he was just too scared to go up to her.

Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, My son was very upset for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.

At that, the old man started crying and said, Thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. Happy Mother’s Day to you. The man then bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Though badly hurt and shaken, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile.

Hey, ladies! It’s summer again and it’s time for a new you! No more make-up, no more pretending! Yes, that’s right! It’s time to stop making ourselves beautiful for the camera, and start posting confident pictures without all the make-up and extra tricks we add onto ourselves in the hope of appearing more attractive and beautiful. Because believe it or not, we already are!

After we wash our face and go to bed, it is not so perfect. You know it the face we should confidently be showing to the world! Who cares if you have pimples(面痕)or your eyes look small, or if you have crow’s feet? Guess what? Those are actually what make you such a beautifully grown woman. And any person who doesn’t think so is just not as strong as you.

Nowadays we are so prone to do anything and everything to make us look as young and perfect as possible. Yet the troth is, by doing this, we are actually making our tree skin get worse and badly affected by all the junk we put on. We are making ourselves believe that by changing our appearance we will be more accepted and seem more attractive to other people. And yet, our final goal is to find that without all of the make-up. What kind of twisted(扭曲的)game are we really playing with ourselves?

So I would like to make a suggestion for all women out there to give yourself a break at least this summer. Take a couple of pictures without all of that make-up on. You don’t need it every single day, especially not this hot summer! You’ll be surprised that the more confident you are about showing the real side of you, the more attractive you will be to everyone else.

Yes, the saying, Beauty comes from within is an old one, definitely still holds some troth today. So be brave, carefree, and make-up free! Let the world see you for who you really are!

It’s generally believed that people act the way they do because of their personalities and attitudes. They recycle their garbage because they care about the environment. They pay $5 for a caramel brulee latte because they like expensive coffee drinks.
It’s undeniable that behavior comes from our inner dispositions(性情), but in many instances we also draw inferences about who we are, as suggested by the social psychologist Daryl Bern, by observing our own behavior. We can be strangers to ourselves. If we knew our own minds, why should we need to guess what our preferences are from our behavior? If our minds were an open book, we would know exactly how much we care about the environment or like lattes. Actually, we often need to look to our behavior to figure out who we are.
Moreover, we don’t just use our behavior to learn about our particular types of character --- we infer characters that weren’t there before. Our behavior is often shaped by little pressures around us, which we fail to recognize. Maybe we recycle because our wives and neighbors would disapprove if we didn’t. Maybe we buy lattes in order to impress the people around us. We should not mistakenly believe that we always behave as a result of some inner disposition.
Whatever pressures there can be or inferences one can make, people become what they do, though it may not be in compliance(符合)with their true desires. Therefore, we should all bear in mind Kurt Vonnegut’s advice: We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

32. According to the passage, personalities and attitudes are commonly believed to _________.

A. determine one’s behavior

B. reflect one’s taste

C. influence one’s surroundings

D. result from one’s habits

A. A kind person will offer his seat to the old

B. One buys latte out of true love of coffee

C. One recycles plastics to protect the environment

D. The return of a wallet can indicate one’s honesty

34. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in the passage?

A. We fail to realize our inner dispositions

B. We can be influenced by outside pressures

C. Our behavior is the result of our true desires

D. Our characters can shape our social relationships

35. What does the author mainly discuss in the passage?

A. Personalities and attitudes B. Preferences and habits

C. Behavior and personalities D. Attitudes and preferences

短语the rest of.“其余的…”句意:当她举行聚会的时候,她不得不邀请街上的其他人。

第五处:考查固定短语。短语dance to the music随着音乐跳舞。

Dear Jim,

I am writing to tell you more about the new form of sharing bike mobike mentioned in your latest letter..

As we all know, cycling is a fun, healthy and economical means of travel around the neighborhood. Parking a bike takes up less space and riding bicycles a. Besides, with more people taking to bicycles, the traffic problem in big cities will greatly be eased.

Although there are so many advantagesit also has its own limitations. It is unsuitable for a long journey. As most bikes don't have a roof in case of rain, it is inconvenient and unsafe to ride bicycles in the heavy rain. What is worse, some people with bad manners park the bicycle everywhere at their will, which leads to the disorder of the city.

Anyway, the mobike is now a popular means of transport in China. In my opinion, such a change will contribute to a healthy and responsible lifestyle.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua
