Murder on the Orient Express

Agatha Christie, the world's best known mystery writer, is the writer who I love best. Her writing career has spanned more than half a century, and the character she created, the brilliant litter Belgian Hercule Poirot, is a confident, humorous and smart man. I have read many of her novels, such as Death on the Nile, Endless Night and Murder on the Orient Express. Among those novels，I admire the Murder on the Orient Express most.

This novel centered on an orient express, and on this train are people, of all classes, of all nationalities, of all ages. These strangers to one another, were brought together. They slept and ate under one roof, they could not get away from each other. In addition, it seemed that everyone had his own story and tried to hide himself deep. At last, the peaceful atmosphere was broken by a murder of M. Ratchett and Poirot, a famous detective， engaged in investigating this murder.

M. Ratchett, a rich American businessman, was stabbed for 12 times of different strengths. And there was no other evidences except for a woman's handkerchief with an embroidered initial—H in its corner; a gold watch with the hands pointing to a quarter past one and a pipe. As the train ran into the snowdrift and no one could have left the train since M. Ratchett was killed, Poirot believed that the murderer was still with them—on the train. Therefore, Poirot started his investigation in the Istanbul-Calais coach (the first-class cabin ) and the train conductor, Pierre Michel, was the first one to be asked. But M. Bouc, the director or the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons Lits, promised that Pierre was thoroughly respectable and honest. And the followings were Mr. MacQueen, secretary of M. Ratchett; Edward Henry Masterman, the valet; Mrs. Hubbard, the American lady; Greta Ohlsson, the Swedish lady; Natalia Dragomiroff, the Russian princess; the count and Countess Andrenyi; the Colonel Arbuthnot; Mr. Hardman, an strong American; Antonio Foscarelli, a Italian; Mary Hermione Debenham, an English and the last one, Hildegarde Schmidt, the German lady's-maid.

In fact, before investigating those people, Poirot had found a crucial truth --M. Ratchett's real identity was Cassetti, the man who murdered little Daisy Armstrong (a popular American murder). During the investigation, Poirot tried to know about everyone's attitude toward the Armstrong kidnapping case. However, the result he got was that everyone tried to avoid this issue and it seemed that they all had the evidences to show their innocence and made this murder more complex. But nothing could escape from Poirot's eyes, the truth was uncovered step by step and everyone turned out his own face. Originally, all those 12 people had relationships with the Armstrong. In this murder, each person was playing his or her allotted part. It was cut-and-dried, if suspicion should fall on any one person, the evidence of one or more of the others would clear the accused person and confused the issue. So, it was the truth that a self-appointed jury of twelve people who had condemned Cassetti to death.

In this novel, Agatha Christie uncovered again those inevitable problems in capitalist society: the scourge of money, social injustice. Just like Cassetti, a veritable fiend, escaped punishment by law by means of the strength of money. She not only paid attention to the narrative of bizarre plot, but focued more on the depiction of persons' characters. In addition, the ways of detecting described in her novels can be the inspirations for us to do the investigation and have correct reasoning at work or in the daily life. Such as ways of repeated investigation, logical reasoning and psychoanalysis.

To sum up, Agatha Christie is great and her works are worth reading. As a reader, I do really learn a lot from her novels. It is not an exaggeration that she is really a goddess in my heart!
