The dispute between India and Pakistan came ahead at this week of meeting of South-Asia foreign ministers in Bangladesh. The dispute is affecting a fledging trade deal that was painstakingly put together during 4 years’ of negotiations.

Chinese media say 29 Chinese fishermen are being held for ransom by North Korean kidnappers. China Central Television and the Beijing News are reporting a rare public maritime spat between China and North Korea. A North Korean gunboat is reported to have seized several Chinese fishing boats in the Yellow Sea earlier this month. The North Koreans who are holding the boats and sailors demanded nearly $190,000 for their release and set Thursday as the deadline, or else they will sell off the boats. Chinese fishing boats have occasional conflicts with South Korean, Japanese and Philippine authorities while fishing in disputed waters, but it is rare for them to be seized by North Koreans.

A nurse in Spain has become the first person known to have contracted the deadly Ebola virus outside West Africa. The nurse treated two missionaries who died of Ebola after being flown home from the region. One of the men died in August, the other priest died in September. The nurse is now being treated in a specialized unit in Madrid where her condition is described as stable. The Spanish Health Minister Ana Mato made the announcement. “This afternoon we have identified a case of Ebola in a patient in our country. Both health ministry and public health authorities are working together to give the best care to the patient and to guarantee the safety of all citizens.”

The United States has raised its national security threat level for all commercial air flights and has barred passengers from carrying liquids aboard any planes. US officials say a code red alert imposed early today is aimed at commercial traffic from Britain. The threat level for all other commercial flights to or from the United States was increased to code orange indicating a high risk of attack.
