Review of Crazy Stone

There are often works of arts whose tremendous power lies in the way they connect diverse elements into a coincidence that connects with the audience on a comedy level. The power of renowned director Ning Hao’ film Crazy Stone, is evident from the very beginning. As a story it is simple: a bunch of bumbling thieves who have their eyes set on stealing a precious Jade stone. But the mob and a zealous security guard hamper their plan. It gains great with a small investment and beats most blockbusters and other homemade films in fact in terms of entertainment and intelligence. The film is innovative and brilliant on many levels, but the two most important are the use of the montage and its hyperbole and humorous style.

Ning Hao is famous for the way dealing with some plots, namely using the technique of montage. For example, at the beginning of the film, there are four different scenes which separately are the counterfeit transporting company encounters a police, Mr.Bao’s car crashes into the manager’s BMW, the manager doesn’t attend his BMW and the police mediates the conflict between the police and Mr.Bao. All of these scenes are about the same plot so that they can be shown in one scene. However, the director uses four different scenes to describe one plot through montage, that is to say, in a same space --time from different perspectives. This technique seems rare in most homemade films except some foreign ones. The director Ning Hao uses montage just to the point, or at least makes audience find something new and fresh.

The style of this film is clearly hyperbole and humor. Firstly, the story itself can easily make you laugh by countless coincidences. One can feel dizzy following Superman rocketing around skyscrapers and it is hard to connect with a perfect specimen who isn't grounded in reality - or grounded in general. But audience members can chuckle and relax watching these three stooges mistakenly return the genuine jade and try all methods to steal the fake one. Besides, there are an array of local dialects. Crazy Stone is uncommon in that the entire movie is spoken in a mishmash of local dialects, with Chongqing; Henan dialect and various Hong Kongidioms used to great comedic effect. As is relatively common in Chinese humor, many jokes are puns or other plays on the language, like "I bump your lungs." "BMW means Bie Mo Wo( "don't touch me" in Chinese)." "You insulted my IQ.". All the jokes are subtle and perfectly crafted. This flick is enough to show that the director can entertain the masses, which can be rare in most mainland movies.

The film also pays homage to or draws influence from a number of films, especially Guy Ritchie’s Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Indeed, we can see so many similarities among them that even someone think Crazy Stone is a copy of these two films. On the other hand, someone consider Ning Hao’s using excellent director’s technique as reference as a great step to promote homemade movies’ development. What’s more, it is enjoyed by most audience. Carefully analyzing Guy Ritchie’s two films and Crazy Stone, we can easily find that Ning Hao not only takes advantage of these two films, but also localize many factors, such as setting the story background at Chinese culture and life, to make it a film with bright Chinese characteristics.

Few of the actors are famous in this movie, like Xu Zheng, Guo Tao, and Huang Bo, and so on. But all of them show vivid images and become part of the success of this film. Who impresses me most in the film is Huang Bo who is not very handsome but very funny; any role he acts is unforgettable. He won the 2013,50th Taipei golden horse golden horse award for best supporting actor award. He is one of the most influential stars in China. With everyone’s efforts, Crazy Stone made a huge success, awarding the 12th China ornamental column awards for outstanding digital movie award.

As an audience member, I really love this film for its artful plot and humorous style and it is the most exhilarating comedy films I have seen. With a good plot, fresh actors, subtle coincidences and classical scenes, Crazy Stone adds up to an enjoyable surprise in Chinese film history. What’s more ,The use of the montage and humorous style are rooted in deep sense of humor. No wonder Crazy Stone laughed all the way to the top of the box office.
