Love cures people—both the ones who give it and the ones who receive it.

——Dr. Karl Menninger

I was being interviewed by a senior manager for a major insurance company . I told him 31 that the main reason why I was 32 with them was my 33 to keep my family in Boston. My wife of 26 years old had recently died of a heart attack . A(n) 34 in Boston would also help me reduce some of the pain of the loss. Bruce ,the interviewer ,was politely sympathetic, and didn’t probe any 35 .He acknowledged my loss and ,with great respect ,moved on to another 36 .

After the next 37 of interview , Bruce took me to lunch with another manager .Then he asked me to take a 38 with him. He told me that he , 39 , had lost his wife .And he had also been married 20 years and had three children. In his sharing, I realized that he had 40 the same pain as I had , a pain that was almost 41 to explain to someone who had not lost a loved 42 . He offered his business card and home phone number and 43 that, if I needed help or just wanted someone to 44 , I should feel 45 to give him a call, no matter 46 I got the job or not. He wanted me to know that he was there if I 47 needed any help.

From that one act of kindness, when he had no idea 48 we would ever see each other again, he helped me 49 one of life’s greatest losses. He turned the normal 50 business interview process into an act of caring and support for another person in a time of need.

Li Ao’s two speeches help bring trip to climax

2005—09—24 06:52

The “Chinese Culture” trip to the mainland by Li Ao , a prominent writer living in Taiwan ,came to a climax when he gave a speech at Tsinghua University on Friday in Beijing ,following his speech on Wednesday at Peking University.

In the speech ,he claimed that China had never been as prosperous as it is today.

He said that the Communist Party of China is “the only party” that can take China on to global success.

In a similar vein ,Li ,in his speech at Peking University ,said that young students should not only care about themselves and he encouraged them to build the confidence to shoulder responsibility for their motherland.

Li, born in 1935 in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, spent most of his first 14 years in Beijing before leaving for Taiwan in 1949. Aside from his speeches in Beijing, he visited the Palace Museum, his primary school teacher and had a reunion with his primary school classmates.

As a television talk show host with the Hong Kong Phoenix Cable TV Network, Li, an ardent supporter of China’s reunification and an earnest scholar ,has cultivated a large following on the mainland.

As a result ,his two speeches ,broadcast live over Phoenix TV, attracted a lot of public attention. Students from colleges and universities outside of Beijing came to the capital especially to follow Li’s tour. They wore white shirts embroidered with Chinese characters welcoming Li home.

Meanwhile ,students at the two leading universities gave mixed comments on Li’s speech.

“As far as I know ,most of the students on campus or on the net praised Li Ao’s speech.” said Li Rui ,a female student from Peking University , “Li’s speech gave a new perspective.”

However, Zhang Yongqi, a doctorate candidate at Peking University ,said “ I regard him more like a celebrity than a scholar. Li is good at showing off in public and command good public speaking skill.”

51In the speech given to the Peking University students, Li Ao encouraged the students .

Ato make their efforts to the reunification of the mainland and Taiwan

Cburden some responsibility for their motherland

Dto care about themselves in life and studies

Japanese Pet Owners Turning To Jellyfish

Pet owners in Tokyo have found a new companion—the jellyfish(水母)

They don’t bark ,or make your clothes dirty. They don’t leave claw marks on the sofa ,and—best of all—they provide calm.

“It relaxes me to watch them float,” Miki koyama ,a 28-year-old office worker, said of two doughnut-sized jellyfish floating in a tank at her Tokyo apartment.

The pet jellyfish craze has been the topic of special shows on nearly all major TV networks in Japan. Jellyfish have even pushed their way onto the pages YC of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun , the country’s leading economic newspaper.

As is often the case here ,single women in their 20s and 30s appear to be encouraging this fashion.

Many consider the creatures’ slow, gentle movement in the water as their main attraction. Jellyfish are a kind of relaxation-introducing object of art.

There aren’t a lot of troubles to take care of . And their sting is mild.

“Jellyfish never disturb you,” said Hironobu Fuji, an employee at a Tokyo pet shop. “If you leave the house for a week, it doesn’t matter to them I think that’s why they are popular with women who live alone and want to keep a pet.”

The pet species tend to be small ,and are transparent ,pale blue or milky white.

They range in price from about US $ 14 to $ 38—a steal in a country where an atlas beetle (another popular pet )lives can fetch thousands of dollars.

Some 50 to 60 pet shops in the Tokyo area now sell jellyfish ,according to Hiroshi Yazaki of Nisso Industry Co. Ltd ,which has introduced special jellyfish aquariums(养鱼缸)costing between $ 461 and $ 508.

Youth is not a time of life : it is a state of mind: it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees: it is a matter of the will ,a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance(占优势)of courage over timidity, of the appetite of adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ides.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul, Worry, fear ,selfdistrust bowsbends the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human beings heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty ,hop ,cheer ,courage and power from men and from the Infinite (means God ), so long are you young.

When the aerials are down ,and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism (冷嘲热讽)and the ice of pessimism ,then you are grown old ,even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism ,there is hope you may die young at 80.

67In the opinion of the writer ,youth is .

a. a matter of the will ,a quality of the imagination ,a vigor of the emotions

b. the freshness of the deep springs of life and a state of mind

c. a matter of rosy cheeks ,red lips and supple knees

d. a wonderful time of life filled with adventures

Aa and b Ba and c Cb and c Db and d

68When will you lose heart in the opinion of the writer?

AWhen you worry about little things.

BWhen you can’t believe in yourself.

CWhen you are always afraid to make mistakes in some little things.

DAll the above

69Which of the following statements is wrong according to the passage?

AYouth is not a time of life

BWhen you begin to have no hope of your life , you will start to grow old

CEven if you had no interest in life ,you won’t be grown old even in your late seventies.

DWhen you have no interest in life, you will be grown old even in you early twenties.

70What conclusion can you draw from the passage?

AYouth is of great importance to everyone

BYour life should be full of messages of will ,hope ,courage, cheer ,power and so on

CYour should say Hello to youth

DYou should care for your youth and health
