Dolphins(海豚)are not fish, but warm-blooded animals. They live in groups, and speak to each other in their own language. In this, they are like other animals, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals. Their brain is nearly the same size as our own, and they live a long time at least twenty or thirty years.

Like some animals, dolphins use sound to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw.

Strangely, dolphins seem to like man, and for thousands of years there have been stories about the dolphin and its friendship with people.

There is a story about sailors in the 19th century. In a dangerous part of the sea off the coast of New Zealand, they learnt to look for a dolphin called Jack. From 1871 to 1903, Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. Then in 1903 a passenger on a boat called The Penguin shot and wounded Jack. He recovered and for nine years more continued to guide all ships through the areaexcept for The Penguin.

Today, some people continue to kill dolphins, but many countries of the world now protect them and in these places it is against the law to kill them.

She’s rarely seen without an elegant handbag on her arm, but the question of what the Queen keeps inside it has long remained a mystery. Now a new book claims to cast light on the contents of the royal matriarch’s main possession.

What’s In The Queen’s Handbag And Other Royal Secrets reveals that though the 81yearold British monarch(君主)doesn’t carry cash, keys or passport—since she doesn’t own one—her bag is far from empty. Inside are a collection of little presents from her children, a makeup case, some family photos, and a camera sometimes. There’s also an sshaped metal hook that she places on the dinner table’s edge to hang her bag from so that it doesn’t touch the floor.

Should you ever meet the Queen, it’s not what’s in her bag but what she does with it that should concern you. She uses her bags, of which she has about 200 made by Londonbased firm Launier, to send signals to her staff.

Before dining with the Queen, a point is made to inform guests that dinner will end in about five minutes after she places her bag on the table top.

On walkabouts, she holds the bag to one side to show she intends to move on, at which point a ladyinwaiting joins the conversation, allowing her to slip away without causing offence.

When at a banquet, if the Queen’s bag is placed on the floor, then it’s a sign that she’s not finding the conversation interesting, and wants nothing more than to escape. However, if the royal bag is dangling happily from the crook of her left arm, she is happy and relaxed.

46. What does the article tell us about the Queen’s handbag?

A. She seldom has it with her. B. She always carries the same handbag.

C. It used to be thought empty. D. Its contents are not the same as ours.

47. When is it necessary for the Queen to convey her intention with her bag?

A. When she is with guests. B. When she eats outside.

C. When she has her staff around. D. When she is tired of speaking.

48. The Queen gives no signal when she________.

A. hangs her bag on the metal hook B. hangs her bag from her left arm

C. places her bag on the floor D. puts her bag on the table top

49. By holding her bag to one side, the Queen shows she wants to________.

A. talk to her ladyinwaiting B. start a conversation

C. stop to continue her walk D. go on with the talk

50. Whats In The Queens Handbag And Other Royal Secrets is italicized (用斜体写)because thats ________.

A. the very title of the article B. the name of a book

C. the main information given in the article D. what the writer wants to stress

C

In his fascinating new book, “The Sibling (兄弟姐妹) Effect: What Bonds Among Brothers and Sisters Reveal About Us,” Jeffrey Kluger, a father of two daughters, describes what happens in our life, about which we may not show much concern. For example, he claims that “95 percent of parents in the world have a favorite child — and the other 5 percent are lying.”

Kluger may be overstating the figures for dramatic effect — but despite every parent’s strong denial (否认) that they have a favorite child — scientific research shows that he is not far off the truth.

According to a recent study by Professor Scott and other researchers from the University of California — which followed 384 sibling pairs and their parents for three years — 65 percent of the mothers and 70 percent of fathers showed a preference for one child. As this was among families that knew they were being monitored, there’s a strong possibility that a significantly larger number of parents could favor a child in life.

Favoritism is certainly a controversial topic. When raised as a subject for discussion among parents, it always arouses a stream of great annoyance and immediate denials. But interestingly, a lot of personal anecdotes appear from parents who say they were overshadowed by a favored sibling, or were, indeed, their mother or father’s favorite.

Other research, where siblings have been asked to say who their mother and father favor, suggests that mothers do tend to show a preference for their first-born son, but fathers often show great affection for their youngest daughters. Parents will often be drawn to the child who is easiest to get along with — or the child that shares similar character to them. For example, mom will have a special bond with her sensitive son who has a talent for art, while dad will pay special attention to his sporty daughter.

Professor Scott says being favored or not in a family can color our behavior as adults. “Children who feel they are less loved within their family are more likely to develop low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.” He also agrees that favored children can find life more difficult when they have to struggle to manage their existence in the real world.

51. In Paragraph 2, what does the writer think of Kluger’s claim?

   A. It is a fact to some degree.                            B. It produces dramatic effect.

   C. It is the result of a study.                                   D. It is nothing but a warning.

52. When asked if they have a favorite child, parents tend to ________.

   A. show a great interest in the topic           B. complain about being ignored when young

   C. be angry and refuse to admit it         D. express their preference for the youngest child

53. The underlined word “overshadowed” in Paragraph 4 can be understood as “ ________”.

   A. made the object of envy                      B. given lots of protection

   C. treated much better                         D. made to seem less important

54. Professor Scott believes that ________.

   A. favored children will have more courage when facing difficulties in life

   B. parents’ way of treating children affects their behavior when they grow up

   C. being less favored in a family does more harm than being favored

   D. least-favored children will not show great respect for their parents

55. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

   A. Love is Essential to a Child’s Growth                B. Every Parent Has a Favorite Child

   C. Bonds among Sisters and Brothers              D. Parents’ favoritism Affects a Child

D

Lee Ann Laraway has polio (小儿麻痹症) and is not able to move very much. Most things are out of reach for her. Jeannie, a Labrador retriever, acts as her arms and legs. Jeannie understands 72 or more different commands. On a shopping trip, she can get money for Lee Ann at the bank or candies at the store. She can pay the cashier (收银员) and get change back.
