A Report on “Who Moved My Cheese”

Who Moved My Cheese, written by Dr. Spencer Johnson in September 1998.

There are three sections in this book. In the first section, some former classmates are talking about the changes happening in their lives at their class reunion and most of them are upset about the changes. In the second section, which is the core of the book, mainly deals with the story of Who Moved My Cheese.

In the story, there are four characters, two mice and two little people. They are living in a “Maze” and spending time running through the maze looking for cheese. The two mice, Sniff and Scurry, finding the cheese by instinct while the two people, Hem and How, do the same thing for the feeling of happiness and success. One day the four found the Cheese Station C, in which has large stores of Cheese. After that, they went there every morning.

But, one morning they arrived there and found no cheeses. Sniff and Scurry quickly decided to change as things changed, leaving the station C for a new place. But Hem and Haw continued to go to there, found no Cheese, and went back home, with frustration and complains.

Several days later, Haws made up his mind to leave but Hems rejected to go with him. It seemed like he would have been lost in the maze forever after a long dark journey. However things changed when he finally found the Cheese Station N, at which he saw his old friends Sniff and Scurry.. Haw quickly said his hellos and soon took bites of every one of his favorite Cheeses. Haw found that the most important thing is that he became enjoyable at the unexpected journey. He had found a better part of himself.

In the section three, people are discussing the story, They think they find how to deal with changes.

We all live in a “Maze”, it can be the companies we work for, or the countries we live in and so on. And what we want in life is the “Cheese”, like success, reputation, money, love….We struggle in the “Maze” and we chase after the “Cheese”. But once we start a gurantee life, how could we face the changes .As a student, most of us are under the protection of our parents. When our “cheeses” are taken away, we reach out and get another one from them. What if we lost them? Will we stand on the same place and don’t know where to go? Or change quickly as changed? Find who you are in the story and recognize that you need change yourself to keep pace with the world.

The world is changing all the time and what we can do is to change to find a better part of ourselves.
