There are many unique festivals around the world. Here are some of them.
Las Fallas, Spain
Las Fallas is one of Spain’s strangest and craziest festivals. Las Fallas means “the fire” in valencian. The focus of this festival is to create and destroy dolls. These dolls are lifelike and usually make fun of dishonest politicians and famous people in Spain. Many dolls are several feet tall. They remain complete until March 19th, after which men fill them with fireworks. All the streetlights arc turned off and the dolls are set on fire at 12 am exactly.
Day of the Dead, Mexico
Day of the Dead is traditionally celebrated on 1st and 2nd of November in Mexico. This festival celebrates the lives of loved ones around you who have died. Celebrations can lake a humorous tone as celebrants remember funny events about the dead. Toys are brought for the Head children and hollies of wine for adults.
Mardi Gras, USA
This day can occur anytime between February 3rd and March 9th, depending on when Easter is held that year. In 1857, a group called Mystik Krewe of Comus staged the first modern style Mardi Gras parade (游行). The parades are headed by “Kings” and “Queens” who throw decorations at the crowd. Practices include dancing, sports competitions, wearing masks, etc.

Max Polazov balances with only his right toe to stop him falling, 130 meters above Moscow, Russia. Suspended hundreds of feet above the Moscow skyline, the 22-year-old boy allows the new Russian craze of extreme urban climbing.
Max has been breaking into the highest buildings in his home city, Moscow, since the age of 17. “Many think that I am a madman,” said Max. “While hanging from a building, I perfectly concentrate on my body and I plan carefully ahead. Without special preparations, I would not advise anyone to do this.”
Never does Max have a fear of heights. Instead, he has a strong desire to rise above the others and look at the world from an unusual point of view. So far Max’s roof-topping craze has taken him from Moscow to oilier Russian cities. But he plans one Hay to come to the West—Britain, France and even the U.S.
Currently, extreme urban climbing has become a youth sub-culture in Russia and each year more and more young Russians are taking to the skies of their cities. It is an absolutely frightening extreme sport for most people. But brave men like Max enjoy climbing to the top of skyscrapers and hanging from them with no belts.
However, breaking into tall buildings faces conflicts with laws in most cities, and following their dangerous entertainment, there may be arrestment and imprisonment (坐牢). Usually climbers try to remain unnoticed from both security guards and police. There are exceptions when the large housing companies invite them to access their buildings, because the photos taken by those climbers may give them quite good advertising. But, after all, it is not a craze you should try!
24. What does Max Polazov want to show according to the passage?
A. His challenges in daily life.      B. His great talent in sports.

C. Advertising companies.       D. Professional photographers.

A. Addicted to Heights       B. Unnoticed Climbers
C. Brave Young Russians      D. Well-prepared Extreme Events

C
The authors of Peter Pan and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland understood that the world they created had a Hark side, so we have the characters Captain Hook and the Queen of Hearts. These arc the traditional villains (反派角色) of children’s books. They may frighten young readers, but their funny behaviors make them have no real authority.
Many authors of more recent books for children and teenagers have similarly shown an interest in the dark side. But the dark side in children’s books today is more violent than it once was, and the shadows it left are rarely driven away by the comic characters and scenes. Instead of stories about children who will not grow up, we now have stories about children who struggle to survive. In 2009, Neil Gaiman won the Newbery Medal for The Graveyard Book, a work about death. Similarly, J.K. Rowling described her Harry Potter hooks as “largely about death.”
It’s hard to imagine how the authors of Peter Pan and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland came up with something like that. They had spent large amounts of time with children; so they knew what the latter wanted in their stories clearly. However, inspiration for many of today’s children’s stories does not seem lo come from children’s experience. For example, according to J.K. Rowling, dementors (摄魂怪) were inspired by her own experience with depression.
Nowadays, writers never produce their works on the basis of the imaginative worlds of children. In today’s stories, those safe magic worlds are rapidly disappearing as adult anxieties edge out childhood fantasy.
28. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. The author of Peter Pan had a dark side.
B. Children may be scared of the villains.
C. Villains’ frightening behaviors result in less authority.
D. Authors of children’s book ignore the dark side.
29. Which of the following best reflects the dark side in recent children’s books?
A. Evil characters.          B. Comic characters.
C. Children’s worries.         D. Adults’ depression.
30. Wind, of the following can replace the underlined phrase “edge out”?
A. make up for         B. make room for
C. take the place of         D. take charge of
31. What’s the purpose of this article?
A. To introduce some children’s books to the readers.
B. To list some lovely characters in children’s books.
C. To point out a problem concerning recent children’s book writing.
D. To analyze the differences between recent and traditional children’s books.

D
More than 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed across the globe each day, and it is likely that many taste bitter.
Now, a new study suggests that coffee lovers ran make their drink taste sweeter by simply changing the color of their coffee mps. Scientists from Federation University Australia and the University of Oxford claim that blue and glass cups reduce coffee’s bitterness, without any need for sugar, and that coffee drank from while cups tastes the bitterest.
To prove their claims, the researchers invited 36 volunteers and used three different colored cups-blue, white and transparent-to do an experiment. In the experiment, coffee consumed from the white cup was found to taste less sweet when compared to the other two cups. And the cup made the coffee taste the sweetest.
The scientists believe that the color brown may be associated with coffee’s bitterness because coffee in a while cup appears the brownest and tastes the bitterest. “Our study clearly shows that the color of coffee cup does influence the flavor (风味) of coffee,” Dr. George of Federation University Australia, said. “But the potential effects may he different between a one-time purchase and a return customer.” “Anyhow, the effect of the cup’s color on the flavor of the coffee suggests that cafe owners, waiters, as well as coffee cup producers should carefully consider the color of their cups,” he added.
However, the idea that color can change the taste of food and drink is not new. A study published last year showed that red, strawberry-flavored cake served on a white plate was 10 percent sweeter and 15 percent more flavorful than the same food presented on a black plate.
32. Why does coffee in while cups taste the least sweet?
A. Because white cups are not as beautiful as other cups.
B. Because while cups are better used to serve cakes.
C. Because while cups reduce the sugar in them.
D. Because white cups make coffee appear the brownest.
33. What elements are involved in the scientists’ research?
① different brands of coffee
② different colored coffee cups
③ some volunteers
④ some producers
A. ①②      B. ②③      C. ②④       D. ③④
34. What is the article mainly about?
A. Color may change the taste in a way.
B. Coffee cups will influence the taste.
C. Customers’ preference of coffee varies.
D. Café owners need careful consideration.
35. How did the scientists prove their claims?
A. By listing facts.          B. By analyzing data.

六、书面表达(25分)
One possible version:
Since I became a senior high school student, I’ve been interested in Chinese classical novels, which are the fruits of our ancestors’ wisdom hundreds or thousands of years ago. I like reading them so much that I take advantage of my limited spare time in weekends to enjoy reading them. However, preparing for the college entrance examination prevented me from spending more time on them. I have to practice intensively for the examination by doing endless exercises and attending various lectures in order to enter a satisfactory university or college.
I think I have done well in this entrance examination and I’ll likely enter a good university. If so, I’ll have enough time to enjoy those novels I like best. While in college, I’ll devote myself to reading as long as I have spare time.
