阅读下列短文从每题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中选出最佳选项

A

Many people wonder how plants talk to each other. They do not have the same language as humans but they have their own ways.Recent research by scientists at Kyoto UniversityJapandescribes how the Lima bean(利马豆)plant protects itself and its neighbours from the red spider(蜘蛛)It sends out clear distress(危险)signals. It is not likely that it makes strange noises to attract attentionthough. It does it very silently.

The Lima bean plant emits(发出)chemicals to send the message of a troublesome intruder(闯入者)to all its neighbours. That is the signal for all the plants to get their defense mechanisms(机制)working.

Plants all over the world have qualitieswhich make them special in their own ways. Some plants produce chemicals that give their leaves and stems a strong taste or smell of chillies(辣椒)spices and herbs used for cooking. These substances either discourage or even kill insects and other animals that might try to eat the plant.

Since plants cannot escape from creatures that feed on themmany have evolved some features to protect them against planteating animals. The two main defenses that plants use are armour(盔甲)and poison. In the Galapagos Islands the cactus has a thick stalk()more than two metres tall putting the tender leaves well out of the reach of the giant tortoises.

Japanese azaleas(杜鹃花)produce poisonous chemicals that let them survive even among hungry deer. Some of these chemical substances may even prevent the growth of nearby plants. For exampleradishes(萝卜)produce a chemical substancewhich slows the growth of spinach.Similarlywalnut trees and apple trees cannot grow together because chemicals released from walnut trees can kill apple trees.

Plants not only have a selfsurvival instinctbut they also have an instinct for community feelingas the Lima bean plant shows.Nature is full of unending surprises!

56What do we know about the Lima bean plant?

AIt can talk to other plants.

BIt can send out signals silently.

CIt can turn to farmers for help.

DIt can make noises to catch attention.

57The Lima bean plant sends a message to its neighbours so that ________.

Ait can gather strength to fight back

Bit can get neighbours’ useful help

Cthey can get ready to fight against the intruder

Dthey can help each other to defend themselves

58Why do some plants produce chemicals that give their leaves and stems a strong taste or smell of chilliesspices and herbs?

ATo be used for cooking.

BTo get rid of the enemies.

CTo show their own nature.

DTo kill insects and animals.

59In Paragraph 4the cactus is an example to show ________.

Awhere intellectual plants can be found

Bwhat plants in the Galapagos Islands look like

Cwhy plants have to fit in with the environment

Dhow plants have evolved to protect themselves

The United States government wants to know what the public thinks about its finding on the safety of cloned animals.

The Food and Drug Administration says meat and milk from clones of adult animals are safe to eat. They called them“as safe to eat as the food we eat every day.”

And when those clones reproduce sexually(有性繁殖)the agency saystheir offspring(后代)are safe to eat as well.

The United States this year could become the first country to allow the sale of foods from cloned animals.

Firsthoweverthe public will have ninety days to comment on three proposed documents.

On December 28th the FD.A.released a long reportcalled a draft risk assessmentalong with two policy documents.

The agency says it must receive comments by April 2nd.The FD.A.seemed ready to act several years agobut an advisory committee called for more research.

For nowthe government will continue to ask producers to honor a request that they do not sell foods from cloned animals.

Clones are still rare. They cost a lot and are difficult to produce.

The FD.A.says most food from cloning is expected to come not from clones themselvesbut from their sexually reproduced offspring. It says clones are expected to be used mostly as breeding animals to spread good qualities.

Public opinion studies show most Americans do not like the idea of food from cloned animals.

But this research also shows the public know little about cloning.

Cloning differs from genetic engineering.A cell taken from a socalled donor animal is grown into an embryo(胚胎)in the laboratory.Nextthe embryo is placed into the uterus(子宫)of a female animal. If the process is successfulthe pregnancy reaches full term and a genetic copy of the donor animal is born.

CPeople’s Comments on Cloned Foods

DCloning and Genetic Engineering

_________________________________________.

Acloning has much in common with genetic engineering

Bnot every cell taken from a donor animal can grow into a genetic copy

Cthe donor animal should be a female one

Dcloned animals grow faster than normal ones

Dogs wag(摇摆) their tails in different directions depending on whether they are excited and wanting to move forward or threatened and thinking of moving backa study has found.

Researchers in Italy examined the tail wagging behaviour of 30 dogscatching their responses to a range of stimuli(刺激物)with video cameras. To conduct the study they chose 15 male dogs and 15 female ones aged between one and six years. The dogs were all family pets whose owners had allowed them to take part in the experiment at Ban University. The dogs were placed in a large wooden box with an opening at the front to allow for them to view various stimuli. They were tested one at a time.

The researchers led by Professor Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trieste found that when the dogs were shown their ownersa positive experiencetheir tails wagged energetically to the right side. When they were shown an unfamiliar human they wagged to the rightbut with somewhat less enthusiasm. The appearance of a cat again caused a righthand side wagalthough with less intensity again. The appearance of a large unfamiliar dogsimilar to a German shepherdchanged the direction of tail wagging to the left.Researchers supposed the dog was thinking of moving back. When the dogs were not shown any stimuli they tended to wag their tails to the leftsuggesting they preferred company. While the changes in the tail wagging were not easily noticed without the aid of videoit was thought that the findings could help people judge the mood(心情)of dogs.Computer and video systemsfor examplecould be used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were required to approach.

68The video cameras were used to catch the dogs’ responses because ________.

Ait was easier to catch the dogs’ response changes in the tail wagging

Bthe dogs were put in the wooden boxes and tested one at a time
