The history of Teachers' Day traces back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). According to the record, during the Han and Jin dynasties, on August 27 each year, the birthday of Confucius, the emperor would go to the Confucius' temple and pay tribute (敬意) to the ancient philosopher followed by court officials, and would also invite royal teachers to the imperial court for a banquet. On this day, teachers around the nation enjoyed a day's vacation and were given dried meat as gifts.

The capital, all states and counties would also hold ceremonies to worship Confucius. Excellent performing teachers would be chosen from academies and learning institutions nationwide, reporting to the royal court and given 500 liang (两) silver coins as awards.

Until the Qing Dynasty, the ceremony, on August 27, was of a larger scale. The teachers' salaries in schools and academies around the nation were raised, and wellperforming teachers would be awarded official titles or promoted to higher positions.

Normally, an ancient teacher's income included salary, accommodation and festival gifts. There was no fixed tuition fee. Generally the parents paid teachers according to their household income. Both money and basic foodstuff could be paid in exchange for tuition.

In private schools, teachers always received money or gifts from the host family at certain festivals or at the beginning and end of each semester.

The festivals in which teachers received gifts varied from region to region, while the most valued ones were the Duanwu, MidAutumn and Chinese New Year festivals, as well as Confucius' birthday and the private tutor's birthday.

Among all the giftgiving festivals, the first meeting gift was a must. When students met their private tutors for the first time, they had to kneel down to Confucius' spirit tablet and then to their private tutors, before presenting a “gift”.

Does Happiness Have a Scent?

When someone is happy, can you smell it?

You can usually tell when someone is happy based on seeing them smile, hearing them laugh or perhaps from receiving a big hug. But can you also smell their happiness? Surprising new research suggests that happiness does have a scent, and that the experience of happiness can be transmitted through smell.

For the study, 12 young men were shown videos meant to bring about a variety of emotions while researchers gathered sweat samples from them. All of the men were healthy and none of them were drug users or smokers, and all were asked to abstain_from drinking or eating smelly foods during the study period.

Those sweat samples were then given to 36 equally healthy young women to smell, while researchers monitored their reactions. Only women were selected to smell the samples, obviously because previous research has shown that women have a better sense of smell than men and are also more sensitive to emotional signaling.

“When a person is happy, his sweat brings about a state similar to happiness in somebody who breathes this smell,” said study coauthor Gun Semin, a professor at Koc University in Turkey.

This is a fascinating finding because it not only means that happiness does have a scent, but that the scent is capable of transmitting the emotion to others. The study also found that other emotions, such as fear, seem to carry a scent too. This ensures previous research suggesting that some negative emotions have a smell, but it is the first time this has proved to be true of positive feelings.

Researchers have yet to isolate (分离) exactly what the chemical compound for the happiness smell is, but you might imagine what the potential applications for such a finding could be. Happiness perfumes, for instance, could be invented. Scent therapies (香味疗法) could also be developed to help people through depression or anxiety.

Perhaps the most surprising result of the study, however, is our broadened understanding of how emotions get communicated, and also how our own emotions are potentially managed through our social context and the emotional states of those around us.

根据“... brought ... and then ...”

Dear Li Hua,

You've asked my advice on how to lead a healthy life. Here are some suggestions for you.

First, keep a balanced diet. Each kind of food provides you with different nutrition which helps make your body strong. Second, keep regular daily habits. Arrange your daily timetable properly and obey it strictly. Never stay up too late because the right amount of sleep can make you energetic. Try to achieve a proper balance between work and play, as the proverb says, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Finally, you should take some exercise and most importantly, be in a good mood every day.

I do hope my suggestions can help you lead a healthy life.

Yours,

David

Many years ago my grandfather had a small farm and chickens. One morning he sent me out to collect fresh eggs. He became concerned when I didn't return after a short interval. When he came looking for me I jumped with joy, but he saw tears in my eyes and noticed that I was in an empty chicken_house.

Noticing I was not in a good mood he asked, “What was wrong?” I told him tearfully, “That dirty rooster,_who was now gentle, in my grandfather's presence, came pecking (啄食) after me and all the hens started cackling (咯咯叫), which scared me, and I ran into the next hen house for safety.” He took me by my hand and we walked right by the now quiet dirty rooster and comfortable hens. We sat under the apple tree, and he related the following story. “Did you notice how that rooster and hens behaved when I came_in? Totally different than when you first came in.” I shouted, “The rooster and hens seemed to come at me.”

My grandfather then said, “That's a new rooster the neighbor gave me. All your life you are going to come across people who will act like that rooster and hens. Only in different ways! It's natural for that rooster to protect his house and his hens. The rooster is the leader and the hens are followers. Same with people! It doesn't matter whether they are men or women. There will always be people who will try to lead your life and if you let them, you will become like the hens.”

“But to be the leader, you have to first be able to lead your own life and be the rooster of your actions. You can be like the rooster leading the hens. Most of us in life are followers, like the hens and some stay hidden in their own chicken houses, like you did.”

注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;

3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

Paragraph 1:

That doesn't mean that the rooster in us is bad or dirty, like the one you just experienced.

Paragraph 2:

Then he did the smartest move.

Paragraph 1:

That doesn't mean that the rooster in us is bad or dirty, like the one you just experienced. That's just the way some people naturally are, at least in their own minds. But did you notice the respect and the way he quieted down when I came_in? He saw me in his sense as a bigger, stronger and probably smarter rooster than he is, which I am and so are you. But you didn't think or believe it strong enough for him to feel. Next time before you walk in, believe that the rooster is just a tiny, sweet chick, and those hens are laying beautiful golden eggs that we can have for breakfast.”

Paragraph 2:

Then he did the smartest move. He took me back to the chicken house, walked away and said, “Now go in and pick those golden eggs for breakfast.” Strangely, even while I was still scared,_I bravely walked into the chicken_house,_ignored the rooster and picked up our golden eggs for breakfast.
