Formostapplicationsa33uFminimum,lowESR(0.5-2ohmtantalumcapacitorshouldbeattachedasclosetotheregulator'soutputaspossible.Thiswilleffectivelylowertheregulator'soutputimpedance,increasetransientresponseandeliminateanyoscillationsthatarenormallyassociatedwithlowdropoutregu-lators.Additionalbypasscapacitorscanbeusedattheremoteloadlocationstofurtherimproveregulation.Thesecanbeeitherofthetantalumortheelectrolyticvariety.Unlesstheregulatorislocatedveryclosetothepowersupplyfiltercapacitor(s,a4.7uFminimumlowESR(0.5-2ohmtantalumcapacitorshouldalsobeaddedtotheregulator'sinput.Anelectrolyticmayalsobesubstitutedifdesired.Whensubstitutingelectrolyticinplaceoftantalumcapacitors,agoodruleofthumbtofollowistoincreasethesizeoftheelectrolyticbyafactorof10overthetantalumvalue.
LOADREGULATION
Forbestresultsthegroundpinshouldbeconnecteddirectlytotheloadasshownbelow,thiseffectivelyreducesthegroundloopeffectandeliminatesexcessivevoltagedropinthesenseleg.Itisalsoimportanttokeeptheoutputconnectionbetweentheregulatorandtheloadasshortaspossiblesincethisdirectlyaffectstheloadregulation.Forexample,if20gaugewirewereusedwhichhasaresistanceofabout.008ohmsperfoot,thiswouldresultinadropof8mV/ftat1Ampofloadcurrent.Itisalsoimportanttofollowthecapacitorselectionguidelinestoachievebestperformance.RefertoFigure1forconnectiondia-gram.

OVERLOADSHUTDOWN
TheMSK5332featuresbothpowerandthermaloverloadprotection.Whenthemaximumpowerdissipationisnotex-ceeded,theregulatorwillcurrentlimitslightlyaboveits3amprating.AstheVin-Voutvoltageincreases,however,shutdownoccursinrelationtothemaximumpowerdissipationcurve.Ifthedeviceheatsenoughtoexceeditsrateddiejunctiontem-peratureduetoexcessiveambienttemperature,improperheatsinkingetc.,theregulatorwillshutdownuntilanappropriatejunctiontemperatureismaintained.Itshouldalsobenotedthatinthecaseofanextremeoverload,suchasasustaineddirectshort,thedevicemaynotbeabletorecover.Intheseinstances,thedevicemustbeshutoffandpowerreappliedtoeliminatetheshutdowncondition.
